Tensions and frustrations are swirling within the Buffalo Sabres fanbase and for good reason. It is the 14th straight season of no playoffs in Buffalo and there's been a negative storm surge surrounding the franchise. There has been very little belief for general manager Kevyn Adams and for good reason.
Whether it's lack of signing better players or handing out questionable contract extensions, Adams is not the most popular guy to Sabres fans. With that being said, I have a solution for Adams to show the fans he means business this offseason.
If the general manager is serious about turning things around, he should try to sign the biggest fish on the free agent market if he is available, Mitch Marner. This season with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Marner played in 81 games where he scored 27 goals and recorded 75 assists. In the playoffs, Mitch has two goals and ten assists so far.
Listen, I'm sure there will be people who will read this and will laugh or think I'm crazy. However, this is the perfect chance for Adams to show the fanbase he wants to turn things around. The big question is the most obvious one, will Marner be willing to come to Buffalo?
At 28 years old, it would be perfect to sign Marner. Mitch is from Markham, Ontario which is about two hours from Buffalo, so he would be somewhat close to home. He would be a perfect addition to the lineup and can help Buffalo, especially on the power play which has been a major issue the last couple of seasons.
Again, if he's available and willing to play for the Sabres then Adams should try to pursue him. Give the fans a reason to look forward to the season and you care about improving the team. Do I think he will sign Marner? I don't think so.
But if the Sabres can sign Taylor Hall, then anything is possible.
