Josh Norris says Buffalo Sabres fans are finally 'getting let out of a cage'

Buffalo is the best hockey market in the United States, and that's especially true when the Sabres are among the NHL's Stanley Cup contenders.

Buffalo Sabres center Josh Norris heard stories about the franchise's rabid fanbase before arriving to the organization in a 2025 trade. Now he's getting to experience it.

Sabres fans are back in full force after the team soared up the NHL standings with a 33-6-4 record over its past 43 games dating back to early December. Buffalo is tied with the Carolina Hurricanes for the top spot in the Eastern Conference at 96 points.

"I feel like they're getting let out of a cage in a sense — and I mean that in the best way possible," Norris told John Wawrow of the Associated Press. "... Now that we're in this spot, I think it's hard to miss. It's right in front of you. And it's incredible to be a part of."

The 26-year-old Michigan native has been a key part of the club's offensive success. He's scored 25 points (10 goals and 15 assists) across 34 appearances this season.

Norris' extensive injury history has prevented him from fully reaching his potential since scoring 35 goals for the Ottawa Senators in 2021-22, but he's managed to stay healthy since the NHL resumed play last month following the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The high-upside forward's ability to light the lamp combined with his recent success in the faceoff circle (54.1% over the past eight games) points toward him taking on a key role in the playoffs.

Josh Norris could emerge as the X-Factor in Buffalo Sabres' Stanley Cup pursuit

Yes, the Sabres are going to lean heavily on the likes of Tage Thompson, Rasmus Dahlin and Alex Tuch to carry the offensive load in the postseason, but deep NHL playoff runs are often created by timely secondary scoring.

Norris is more than capable of helping fill that niche for Buffalo.

The 2017 first-round pick has hit a little lull lately, tallying just two points over his last nine games, but his underlying numbers illustrate his attacking potential.

Buffalo generates 4.82 goals per 60 minutes (xGF/60) with Norris on the ice in all situations, according to Natural Stat Trick. Not only is that the highest mark on the team, but it's a half-goal per hour more than anybody else. Jason Zucker ranks second in the key category (4.32).

Norris has been skating on a line with Josh Doan and Noah Ostlund as of late. Having two players who are relentless forecheckers willing to do the dirty work in the corners should open up the center to seek out dangerous scoring areas in the tightly contested playoffs.

Quite simply, the Sabres are a far more complete offensive team when the University of Michigan is healthy, even if he's not racking up points at an elite rate.

His faceoff skills — he's winning them at a modest 49.7% rate this season, but entered the year at 52.5% for his career — mean he could find himself on the ice for a lot of key offensive-zone starts, adding to his potential postseason value.

Put it all together and it's fair to argue Norris will be one of the Sabres' most important players as they attempt to hunt down the organization's first championship.

A standout playoff run, even if it doesn't result in a Stanley Cup title, would also go a long way in helping the talented center start changing the narrative around his injury-plagued career.
