The Buffalo Sabres are looking to recover from their second-round series loss to the Montreal Canadiens. One way to do that is to see what prospects and young players they have who can learn from this season. No team is the same from year to year. However, some younger players have a bright future with the organization.
One saw action in both the regular and post seasons for the first time in his NHL career: Konsta Helenius. The first-round investment by the Sabres is turning into a prosperous one.
In January, he made his NHL debut. He impressed the coaches and scored his first goal and three points in an impressive win against the Nashville Predators. It was enough to keep on the active roster for most of January and into early February.
The difference of depth between this season's roster and squads from years past benefited the Sabres this year, and it may be why Helenius was not recalled past February until the postseason. He was brought in for the roster during the series against Montreal.
Despite the series loss, Konsta Helenius scored two goals in the playoffs for the Sabres
Demonstrating his ability in both the regular and postseason will give the Sabres options and something to look forward to as they look towards this summer.
The Sabres have several free agents that they will need to decide whether or not to bring back. Restricted free agent Peyton Krebs and unrestricted free agent Josh Dunne both are at the center position.
Having a prospect such as Helenius, who played well when given his chance, may also allow the Sabres to be able to look at what they have before re-signing certain players.
Saving in certain areas will allow them to look at top flight free agents but not overreach. Helenius could earn a roster spot for not just a month or so but an entire season. His contract is also cap friendly.
The young center is signed through 2028 and is on an entry-level deal. Giving him time to develop and play into a contract may give him incentive for next season.
Success means that many of players on the Sabres currently will be looked at by other teams. But if the depth and overlooked players with potential that can move in as new pieces and keep the momentum from this past season.
Helenius is one of those young pieces that should be a big part of their future.
