Latest extension confirms the Sabres are spiraling out of control

The Buffalo Sabres just signed Jack Quinn to an extension, and this comes just a day and a half after they shipped JJ Peterka to the Wasatch Range.

This week, the Buffalo Sabres let the Utah Mammoth fleece them in a trade involving JJ Peterka. Now? They just extended Jack Quinn to a two-year, $3.375 million AAV extension. Yeah, you read that right. They traded a brewing star winger, only to extend another winger who woefully underperformed in 2024-25.

Everyone, this is the Sabres for you. The Pittsburgh Pirates of the NHL, if one is audacious enough to make the claim. I mean, the script is so bad these days, that I'm really starting to wonder whether general manager Kevyn Adams even cares anymore.

Once again, he traded away a brewing star and brought back an underperformer. If you're still following this team after this weekend if Adams botches the draft, then you're a true Sabres fan, I'll give you that much.

JJ Peterka and Jack Quinn were already heading in opposite directions before this week

Here's a little tale of the tape for you, so you can get a visual here: JJ Peterka played in 77 games this past season, and he finished the year with 68 points and 27 goals. Peterka recorded 18:11 of average total ice time, and proved he was the best player on what was the short-lived Kid Line. Remember that?

With Dylan Cozens going to Ottawa during the season, that line was never coming back to Buffalo. But at least Jack Quinn could exercise some redemption, right? Right?

Oh no. Not even close. As Quinn, despite missing all but 27 games in 2023-24, at least looked respectable when he took the ice for the Blue and Gold. This season, he played in 74 games and ended up with 39 points and 15 goals. Hey, at least he averaged over a half-point per game, so that's something, yeah?

Okay, I guess not. Not when you're as starved of a fanbase these days as the Sabres have become. I mean, right now, this is laughable. Nobody in the fanbase would've thought they'd trade Peterka for a pair of Quinn-like players (even if one of them is a defenseman), and extend Quinn.

Kevyn Adams needs some redemption fast

With just two hours before the 2025 NHL Draft kicks off, maybe Adams is just waiting to surprise us. But right now, Sabres fans, don't get your hopes up. Heck, it wouldn't surprise me if he traded Alex Tuch to the New York Islanders and the ninth selection for the 16th and 17th picks.

And yeah, you read that right. Because Adams, given the way he's been making transactions lately, would somehow justify giving away a solid winger and the ninth selection for back-to-back picks in the middle of the first round.

Okay, that might be a little farfetched, but you get my point. Either way, he needs to make a blockbuster move in the Sabres favor, or else the fanbase will be calling on Terry Pegula to hand Adams his walking papers louder than ever before.
