The last time we saw Devon Levi with the Buffalo Sabres, he helped the Sabres come back and win against the Los Angeles Kings back on January 24th. Ever since then, he has been with Buffalo's AHL affiliate the Rochester Americans. It's fair to say the Sabres season hasn't gone as planned. The Sabres are 24-27-4 and are on the verge of missing the playoffs for a 13th straight season.
There was lots of chatter and discussion about what Buffalo should do with Levi. First of all, the team in front of him is not good. Second, he was not getting any playing time. Before playing in the Kings game, the last time Devon started for Buffalo was on January 8th when the Sabres hosted the Seattle Kraken.
Ever since the All-Star break, Levi was loaned to the Americans and we haven't seen him in a game since. It turned out to be the right move to have him play in the AHL because he's doing a great job. In the 10 games played with the Amerks this season, Levi is 6-2-2. He has a save percentage of .930 and a 2.38 goals-against average.
In his recent game, Devon was phenomenal. He made 52 saves as Rochester beat the Toronto Marlies 2-1 in overtime.
Let me just say something, what he is doing with the Amerks is a great sign. He is playing meaningful games as Rochester is jockeying for position to make another run in the AHL playoffs. I mentioned earlier that Buffalo is not doing well compared to last season, so it's good to see him playing in games that mean something instead of ruining his confidence.
General manager Kevyn Adams did the right thing by having Levi playing in Rochester and he should be there for the rest of the season in my opinion. There is no reason to have him on the Sabres this year, especially with Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen playing well.
