Coming into this season, the Buffalo Sabres were going to roll with three goaltenders. The goalies were Devon Levi, Eric Comrie and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. After having a strong sample size during the 2022-2023 campaign, Levi was going to be the guy. However, as the season went along, things were not going well and Buffalo sent Devon down to the Rochester Americans.

As for Comrie, he was getting starts but the results weren't there. This year, it was all about Luukkonen. After a strong first half, fans were left wondering if this was the year UPL would put together a complete season. Even though the Sabres fell short of the postseason once again, Luukkonen was awesome for Buffalo this year.

As you can see in the graphic above credited to The Sabre Report, Ukko's stat line was impressive this season. Unfortunately, he did not get help from the team in front of him because it's possible he could be in the Vezina conversation this season. It's been a long time since we had a goaltender on Buffalo in the conversation of being a Vezina candidate.

With that being said, the Sabres have themselves two solid and young goaltenders. This is going to be a critical offseason for general manager Kevyn Adams. Not only is Luukkonen due for a new contract, but the name needs to be improved in the offseason.

After what we thought was going to be a good season, it was disappointing to see how the team performed this year. If Adams can improve the blue line and other areas, Levi and Luukkonen can be a good 1-2 punch for Buffalo not only next season but for years to come.

Luukkonen was good this year and he had a bad team in front of him. If Buffalo can improve in the Summer, then they are going to not only help themselves but also their young and talented goalies.
