Three former Sabres who could be options as the season gets under way
With cap space, the Sabres have space to bring in or bring back former players.
As the preseason is only a few weeks away, the Sabres do have the cap space to make a few moves. With $8 million in cap space available they may want to look at adding some depth to the roster. Two players are available and have already been wearers of the blue and gold. One other former Sabres player could be an intriguing trade for Buffalo.
1) Defenseman Marco Scandella - The defenseman was on the roster between 2017 and 2020. During his time with Buffalo he had 30 assists. He has spent the last five season with the St. Louis Blues and if Buffalo wanted to bring him back, they would only need to sign him to a one-year deal.
2) Goalie Malcolm Subban - Depth may be needed at goalie if either James Reimer or Devon Levi do not pan out as the backups to Luukkonen. He had a .914 save percentage in his one start with the Blue Jackets a year ago.
Subban has proven experience as a goalie and would be an easy signing for Buffalo.
3) Defenseman Jack McCabe - currently with the Maple Leafs, a trade with their cross-lake rival could be a spark that the team needs. McCabe was originally drafted by Buffalo in 2012 and was an alternate captain in 2019. He could provide much needed physicality on defense.
The Sabres roster should not be set and with so much cap space they need to look outside the box to add the depth that they will need to break the playoff drought. With only Peyton Krebs still to sign they will need to make a move if they wish to find success during the year.
All three of these former players could make the difference between the post season and being seven points back which is where they finished in the standings a year ago.
