Buffalo Sabres fans looking for a little good news in regards to offensive production amid the team's slow start to the new season should look no further than Prokhor Poltapov.

The CSKA Moscow winger, who joined the Sabres organization as a second-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, has racked up 11 points (seven goals and four assists) in 14 contests to help his club pull into an early tie for first place in the KHL's Western Conference thanks to a 10-game winning streak.

Poltapov, who's also compiled a plus-10 rating, endured some development struggles in the two seasons following the draft. He's emerged as a dependable contributor for CSKA Moscow over the last few campaigns, racking up exactly 40 points in both 2024-25 and 2025-26.

Now the 23-year-old Saint Petersburg native is aiming to showcase one more leap in production before deciding what comes next for his career.

The 5-foot-11 forward will wrap up his current contract with the KHL club at season's end, which will give him the choice between signing an entry-level deal with the Sabres or staying in Russia, likely via another extension with CSKA Moscow.

Going the latter route would significantly reduce his chances of ever making an impact in Buffalo, mostly because of the time factor. He's already entering his mid-20s, and another two- or three-year contract in Russia will push him toward the back end of his peak seasons.

In addition, at some point the Sabres front office, which holds Poltapov's NHL rights indefinitely, will see the difficult task of asking a player at age 26 or 27 to acclimate to North American hockey and may decide it's better to use that contract slot on somebody else.

That's why Poltapov's next decision may be the most important of his hockey career.

If the Russian winger does decide make the journey to Buffalo, he'll likely be given an opportunity to earn a roster spot with the Sabres without spending time with the AHL's Rochester Americans.

In June, assistant general manager Jerry Forton explained to Bill Hoppe of the Times Herald the franchise's mindset when it comes to Poltapov's future.

"We consider him almost a plug-and-play prospect the day he's ready to come over, which I think should be next year. Has middle-six qualities that I think will be pretty unique for our organization. When we talk sometimes about our pieces that have gone out of this organization, or even some of the pieces that have come in in the last year or two, you don't hear his name as much. I think he's very much a guy that can come in and make an impact the day he gets over here."

A chance to move directly to the NHL may tip the scales when it comes time for Poltapov to make a decision, or at least the Sabres will hope so.

He doesn't project as a future first-line talent for Buffalo, but he could establish himself as a reliable middle-six forward capable of playing a solid two-way game.

Beyond that, he'll represent cost-effective depth for a franchise that's already started handing out long-term contracts to young players. Jack Quinn, Jiri Kulich and Konsta Helenius are among the rising stars who will need extensions soon, too.

Then there's the fact the Sabres could use some more star power. A legitimate first-line center remains the most pressing need, though goaltending questions continue to linger, as well. Filling those voids likely won't be cheap.

So, having players like Poltapov, who can post decent numbers without a sky-high price tag, will be important for the organization moving forward.

It remains unclear whether he holds significant NHL aspirations, though. It's a storyline to watch, especially once the 2027 offseason draws closer.
