Declaring whether Buffalo Sabres' 2025-26 season was for real or false hope

The Sabres finally put together a breakthrough campaign to end the franchise's 14-year playoff drought. Now what comes next for Buffalo?

The Buffalo Sabres had a very chaotic 2025-26 season. It started with a really rough, turbulent opening week, during which fans stormed out of the KeyBank Center with brown paper bags over their heads.

Not a great look.

But then something miraculous and undeniably wonderful happened. They won some games, potted a bunch of goals, and changed their general manager. Then they were with the Atlantic Division title in hand and a trip to the playoffs awaiting them.

The hopes that this team could finally end the 14-year postseason drought became reality, and one of the most successful seasons in decades is now the main talking point this summer.

So, was all of that for real, or did all of Western New York just get duped with false hope?

Breakout season is more reality than fiction for the Sabres

There is no denying that this is a special group. With only one big unrestricted free agent to try and sign back, Alex Tuch, there is a great chance they can run the gauntlet again toward the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2026-27.

This team and this fanbase should be confident that next season will continue the success, and that a fall back to earth is unlikely. Moves have already been made to ensure that, with the extension of head coach Lindy Ruff, and speculation is floating around involving Vancouver Canucks superstar Elias Pettersson, along with other potential trade ideas.

Things are looking up for the Sabres, and this recent 50-win season was not a fluke. There were just some minor hiccups before turning over into a wonderful campaign.

Free agency is going to be the time and place where this team's future will land. It is not too brash to say that the championship window has opened for the Sabres, and if that is the case, they need to decide to buy now to win the Stanley Cup.

There is no sense in running it back with the same roster, player for player, as the chances of securing a similar finale to the 2026-27 season would be much harder than this past season. Addressing the goaltending concerns and assuring that, if Alex Tuch is indeed gone, a reputable replacement is ready to fill the void is paramount.

The time to win now is here, and the 14 seasons of heartache without a playoff run are behind us. The Sabres have finally cemented themselves as contenders in the East.
