The Sabres make extremely-rare history in what continues to be a miserable season

The Sabres made history in Utah Thursday night, but not the kind that fans hoped to see.

As if this season couldn’t get more bizarre for the Buffalo Sabres, last night was the icing on the cake. The Sabres took on the Utah Hockey Club in what they hoped would be a third straight road win, but quickly turned into an embarrassing night for the team.

The Sabres trailed 3-2 late and pulled the goalie, as the Sabres worked it around the zone to tie the game, an inadvertent pass from Tage Thompson sent the puck down the ice and into the Sabres net for an own goal.

But wait, it gets better, just 20 seconds after the Sabres attempted to re-enter the zone, Utah cleared a puck that was going wide of the empty net. Rasmus Dahlin tried to catch it and knocked it directly in line with his net, for the Sabres' second own goal of the game.

So this got us thinking, when is the last time this has happened to the Sabres in a game? Let alone any team in the NHL for that matter. This isn’t exactly something that teams keep in their record books that they want to share daily.

The last time something like this happened in an NHL game was six years ago when the New Jersey Devils let up three own goals in a game against the Anaheim Ducks. That’s the only other time this has been recorded in NHL history.

There are no other recordings of teams scoring multiple own goals in one game, but there are plenty of teams who have scored multiple own goals in one season. The 2024-2025 Sabres are now also a part of that list.

The Sabres need these next 15 games to go by fast

This 2024-2025 season has not been a good one for the Sabres, and their fans. In what has been a miserable season watching their team most likely finish last season in the Eastern Conference, these last 15 games can’t go by any quicker.

There will be a lot of questions that need to be answered by ownership and management as the Sabres need to find a way to improve this team. The product they put out on the ice this year wasn’t that bad, but somehow they have found themselves at the bottom of the league.

As the Sabres continue to make history for the wrong reasons, it just sums up the spell this franchise has been put under since Terry Pegula bought the team. Until things change, nights like these will continue to happen and the Sabres will continue to be the laughingstock of the league sadly.
