This ref is forever etched into Sabres lore following brawl with Red Wings

On Wednesday, the Sabres and Red Wings game erupted into a brawl in the closing minutes and it makes for an interesting chapter in each team’s lore.

Fast-forward to March 12th, 2035, if you will. Someone’s going to write an article with the headline going something like this: A look back on the Sabres-Red Wings brawl 10 years ago. Hey, the next decade will go faster than you or I would care to think, and it’ll be fun taking a look back at what happened on March 12th, 2025.

There will also be trivia questions galore surrounding both teams, such as, “Name the season the Sabres finally broke their playoff drought, and how long was said playoff drought?” We’ll all remember both answers to that one question.

But do you know what else someone will ask? Name the referee who uttered the following quote during that Sabres-Red Wings brawl in March 2025. Okay, maybe that’s an imperative sentence, but still, it demands an answer.

The ref in question just inserted himself into Sabres lore

To answer that trivia question, or command, stated in the above section, you may need to grab that article from March 12th, 2035. Or, you can just bookmark this one for the next decade. Anyway, the official, Frederick L’Ecuyer, announced, well, I’ll just let you watch it below.

Yep, so remember the name Frederick L’Ecuyer, as he’ll be the correct answer to that question. Now, you may not want to remember the final score of that game, since the Red Wings took it in what turned out to be a blowout 7-3 victory.

But hey, by 2035 the Sabres may have lifted the Stanley Cup a time or two, so we can all have a good laugh at this point in Sabres history. Yeah, hopefully. But anyway, this won’t be the only time we may see another event in Sabres lore spring up.

The Sabres are about to face the Golden Knights on the Ides of March

I can name a few back-to-back days of the year that are significant. Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday, Christmas Eve and Christmas, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, and, of course, NHL Draft Weekend. Because who can forget the latter, right?

But, you may not know that March 14th and March 15th carry significance, since we got Pi Day, with the infamous Ides of March following. Okay, so I guess every day’s a “holiday” in today’s calendar. But all jokes aside, the Sabres are facing an old face named Jack Eichel once again.

And Eichel has a chance to do something special against his old team. Two things, really: Become the first Golden Knight in franchise history to produce 80 points and 60 assists in a single season. Eichel already owns the single-season franchise record for points and assists with 79 and 59, respectively, but he can hit another pair of milestones against Buffalo.

Of course, this one would be a fond memory for Golden Knights fans about to play a trivia game: Who was the first player in Golden Knights history to produce 80 points and who was he playing against when he put up that 80th point? So, for the Sabres, let’s hope that one doesn’t come to fruition.
