Like other professional sports, the NHL holds an All Star Game at the midway point of the regular season to show case many of the leagues stars together on the same sheet of ice. The games proceeds benefit the players pension fund.
Fan balloting has eliminated some of the allure of the game, as many fan favorite players are selected as opposed to those who actually deserve the honor. I am very much in the favor of eliminating fan balloting, and letting the players, coaches, general managers, and the statistics once again selecting who gets the right to represent their team at the mid season classic. Pondering this, there were actually several changes I would not mind seeing take place to make the game something more eventful. Here are a few of my suggestions. Continue reading this post »

The NHL’s All-Star Fantasy Draft just wrapped up from Gatineau, Quebec, Canada, and Buffalo Sabres fans watching the telecast from their living rooms had to wait 80 minutes before their All-Star right-winger, Jason Pominville, was finally selected.
Team (Daniel) Alfredsson made Pominville the 3rd last pick of the night (robbing the Sabres All-Star of a chance at a new car-given to the last player standing), but gave him quite an introduction and honor by saying he had “a lot of respect for him”, while also mentioning the overtime, playoff series-clinching winner Pominville scored against the Senators.
You deserve to be there, Jason. Congrats.

One of the bright spots on the season for the Buffalo Sabres has been right wing Jason Pominville.
Through 49 games Pominville has 17 goals (2nd – team), 30 Assists (1st – Team), and 47 points (1st – team). 7 of his goals have come from specialty unit play (6PP, 1SH). He has 8 penalty minutes.
He was named Captain of the Buffalo Sabres in Eurpoe just before the season started. Drafted 55th overall in the 2001 Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres, Pominville is part of the core group of guys on this team that have grown up together through Rochester and now play together in Buffalo.
This will be Jason’s first trip to the NHL All Star game. He was a QMJHL First Team All Star in 2002, and was awared the
Frank J. Selke Memorial Trophy as the QMJHL’s most gentlemanly player in the same year.

I had the lines all setup, if the Buffalo Sabres fell into a 0-13 road record in their last 13 games; the District 5 cracks would have started to come out. And that is no crack to the actual District 5 hockey league in Minnesota. The Buffalo Sabres just seemed to be rolling over for their opponents. I could almost hear the coach of of the Hawks Jack Reilly in the heads of opposing coaches as they tell their players to stop celebrating, anyone can beat these guys and the score should be double.
While winning last night against the New Jersey Devils was a relief, it wasn’t a game you could put a lot of belief into. The lone Sabres goal was a gift from the hockey gods – but at this point, the team will take it.

It’s not a laughing matter when your a fan of the Buffalo Sabres, but the road losing streak stands at 12. Listening to WGR550 this morning, Jeremy White gave us another hockey joke to wrap our minds around involving the Buffalo Sabres.
What do you call 13 losses in a row? A Sabres Dozen.
The magic number could climb to 13 tonight when the Buffalo Sabres travel to the Prudential Center to take on the New Jersey Devils, who after winning five of six, have dropped their last two contests.

The Buffalo Sabres are last in the Eastern Conference. They have three games in hand on the Carolina Hurricanes, but catching them would require winning a game…something that seems to be an unrealistic goal these days. The Sabres are 2-7-1 in their last 10 and have been outscored 23-7 in the first 5 games of a road trip. Their 12 straight road losses are a franchise record, which hurts so much more in Darcy Regier’s first “gloves off, no self-imposed salary cap” year.
According to SportsClubStats.com, the team has a 0.5% chance to make the playoffs. It would require a truly epic string of wins, combined with tire fires in other cities. It is very safe to say that there will be no post-season in Buffalo this year. While I am not a guy that ever says, “We need to trade somebody!” (well, I do…but I’m usually being hyperbolic or making fun of those people) it has come to a point of inevitability. So, who absolutely needs to go?…

One Little, Two Little Three Little Losses…..
The Buffalo Sabres organization is not happy with the current losing streak, or the teams inability to recover from injury after injury; but they do seem content on leaning against that crutch and waiting for the offseason before making any sudden moves.
It appears as if though the management team and coaching staff are safe from the chopping block because there is no way to make grades against a team decimated by injury. Darcy Regier has been MIA as of late, cancelling his normal appearance on WGR. Terry Pegula has a team of body guards protecting him from the media. Ted Black continues his vocal protection of a team rife with injuries, underperformers, and over paid role players. Continue reading this post »

The Bandits are Buffalo’s best team year after year and the start to this season has been no different. Buffalo opened their season last Saturday night at home against the Toronto Rock and Banditland was rocking, all 15,800 of us. The beginning of every Bandits season is the start of a possible Championship run and they got off to the right start with a win over the Rock.
Now those of you who aren’t familiar with the National Lacrosse League or lacrosse in general, I’ll break it down for you. It’s a lot like hockey, same number of guys, types of penalties, and length of penalties. It’s has the type of schedule as the NFL, playing only on the weekends, but there is an odd weekend or two when they play back to back games. I’ll get into more informational detail during the NHL All-Star break.
The Bandits played last night in Rochester against their bitter Western New York rival Knighthawks and it was a hard fought battle by both teams, as it always is.
